Ladies and Gentlemen, our three Crus!

The holidays that permitted us to take days off work have all ended, but fortunately one of the sweetest months of the year is beginning. It’s the month of May.

The upcoming weeks will be full of new pleasures, among them the possibility of tasting and purchasing the three new Sangiovese Crus. They’ve now arrived at the Brolio Wine Shop after having made their first appearance at Vinitaly, where they were tasted and admired.

Our faithful readers will remember we offered a first description of the three wines a month ago. In that occasion, we gave a brief overview of the study and research that lasted more than a decade and that culminated in these three expressions of the Sangiovese grapes coming from the three vineyards after which the wines were named.

Here are a few more notes to learn even more about Colledilà, Roncicone and CeniPrimo.

Colledilà

The first of the three Crus to have come to light, it stands out for its complex structure and great, modern elegance. A pure Sangiovese that manages to reveal all the magnificent qualities of this grape that are further exalted by the small dimensions of the vineyard whose name it bears. The soil is a calcareous clay, rocky, rich in calcium carbonate and poor in organic matter. Colledilà vineyard is on a geological formation called Monte Morello, also known as Alberese. Seven hectares in size, it is located at 390 meters above sea level and has a southeastern exposure. The grapes are handpicked and then selected: only perfect clusters become Colledilà.

Roncicone

Its distinctive floral freshness merges with initial spicy notes, acidity and well-defined minerality; tannins just right. Once again, a pure Sangiovese that reveals all the magnificent qualities of this grape, further exalted by the small size of the vineyard whose name it bears. This plot is on soil consisting of Pliocene marine sediments, with sandy deposits and rocks smoothed by the action of the sea, and clay at deeper levels. Roncicone is about 10 hectares in size, located on a Marine Deposits geological formation at 320 meters above sea level, with a southeastern exposure. Grapes are handpicked and then selected: only perfect clusters become Roncicone.

CeniPrimo

Intense on the nose, fresh fruit and violets, good structure and volume. Elegant and well-developed tannic content, balsamic notes. Yet again a pure Sangiovese that reveals all the magnificent qualities of this grape. This is further exalted by the small size of the vineyard whose name it bears, which lies in the great valley of the Arbia River, in the southernmost part of the property. CeniPrimo is located on an Ancient Fluvial Terrace geological formation. The smallest of the three vineyards, only 6 hectares in all, it lies at 300 meters above sea level and has a southwestern exposure. Grapes are handpicked and then selected: only perfect clusters become CeniPrimo.

We’ll be back soon with further interesting insights.
